Back Stage is where a person is able to somewhat let down our guard while they prepare for their Front Stage performance. In fact, if a person can be their self completely, it’s probably because they are Back Stage. Again, Back Stage is where a person prepares for the specific act they will perform on their designated Front Stage. Back Stage can be your bathroom, where you are allowed to be naked and vulnerable without worrying about impressing anyone. For example, Back Stage is where a woman “puts on her face” which she will use in her role enactment on her Front Stage.
In an instant, however, Back Stage can immediately transform into Front Stage; and vice-versa. Say, for example, that you are Back Stage in your bathroom, getting ready to go out and you forget to lock the door. Someone then inadvertently walks in on you preparing for your performance. The second that door is opened, your bathroom instantly transforms into Front Stage. In a situation such as this, you would be required to immediately enact an on-the-spot performance as you attempted to get the person who opened the bathroom door to leave. Once that person left the bathroom, it would instantly revert back into Back Stage.
